This chronological selection of films from the Film-Makers’ Cooperative archive looks at the ways in which avant-garde filmmaking experimented with different methods of geometric abstraction from 1921 to 1980.

Tessa Hughes-Freeland’s films have been shown in a variety of venues, from international museums to seedy bars. The subject matter of her films is confrontational, transgressive, provocative and poetic.

In an effort to bring closer communities of independent filmmakers in New York, on September 22, 2017 we invite you to a presentation of short films by members of The Film-Makers’ Cooperative and MONO NO AWARE.

These 16mm shorts rediscover the intuitive reality and sharp beauty of nature. Whether though haptic landscapes in SUMMER and GLIMPSE OF THE GARDEN or botanical collages like IN THE CONSERVATORY and THE GARDEN OF EARTHLY DELIGHTS, plants and flowers are established as more than embellishment; they are pulled to the foreground as active participants. These filmmakers sometimes use flora as personal metaphor, but ultimately surrender to nature’s complete other-ness.

AGENT OF PARADISE by Mary Bellis (1982) captures a time and place in the East Village that is rapidly fading away as gentrification and construction pour into this neighborhood deeming it unrecognizable.

An evening of film and video work by artists currently in the Integrated Media Arts MFA Program at Hunter College. Programmed around Hunter and the Co-op’s shared home of New York City, these films consider the experience of living in New York: the constant contemplation of what it means for one’s identity to call the city home and what we observe by being here at length.

These two 4-hour workshops aim to help editors transition to Adobe Premiere, the rising industry standard editing software. The workshops are designed to be affordable and comprehensive, and concentrate specifically on editors transitioning from softwares such as Final Cut Pro 7 and Avid.

A second sexy program inspired by exploitation & stag films. Q&A with artists Peggy Ahwesh, Katherine Bauer and MM Serra following screening. This program of films will present an alternative image of the body, of sex, and of intimacy – images that are about individuality and freedom of expression, rather than standardization and profit.

FMC presents a sundry screening of cutups, film collage, and repurposed cinema. The alchemist’s craft was to turn lead into gold, and in much the same way the collagist has taken the discards and chaff of the film industry and conducted a similar transmutation upon the material.

This deeply personal portrait of acclaimed New York–based artist Ida Applebroog was shot with mischievous reverence by her filmmaker daughter, Beth B. Born in the Bronx to Orthodox Jewish émigrés from Poland, Applebroog, now in her 80s, looks back at how she expressed herself through decades of drawings and paintings, as well as her private journals.

Paul Sharits was a visual artist pioneer of the structural film movement along with other artists such as Tony Conrad, Hollis Frampton and Michael Snow. Sharits' work focused primarily on installations incorporating endless film loops, multiple projectors and experimental soundtracks.

Explore the various methods and techniques involved in creating collage films from available material. A variety of film examples will be shown to demonstrate the range of conceptual and technical skills applied.

We commemorate the fiftieth anniversaries of key works from the Film-Makers’ Coop that protested the Vietnam War during the 1960s. As hundreds of thousands across the country flocked to the streets to articulate their dissent, artists and filmmakers took up the mantle of the political avant-garde to seek out aesthetic forms adequate to the political demands of the age.
