Mother/Daughter Double Bill: "Oppressed Majority" by Eléonore Pourriat and "On Falling" by Philo Cohen
On Friday, May 17th, at 7pm, join us at the Film-Makers' Cooperative (475 Park Avenue South, 6th Floor) for a double bill featuring a film by artist Eléonore and her daughter, Philo Cohen.
Oppressed Majority imagines how a man might experience sexual assault in a matriarchal society. On Falling is a tale for mourning and grieving the ongoing violence against women and women adjacent bodies.
The two-part screening will be followed by a discussion between mother and daughter contemplating how they have been channeling one another in their practice, in constant disruption of subjectivity. Pourriat and Cohen re-invent what comes before both in their own family history and in their respective work. Narratives of the mother, the banal, the violent and the mad pave both artists’ practice. They use a wide variety of media to express themselves, from film to photography, to writing, collage, painting and drawing.
The screening and discussion will be held in conjunction with Safe Travel, Pourriat’s first solo exhibition of her painted photography work curated by Cohen at Justine Kurland Studio in Brooklyn.

Eléonore is a French artist, writer and director. She studied theater, English literature and translation studies in Paris. In 2010, she directed her first short film, Oppressed Majority, which was critically acclaimed after millions of views of the film were reached on YouTube. For over a decade, she has been working with director Benoit Cohen. The duo collaborated on six feature films and a TV show together. Eléonore moved to New York City in 2014. In 2017, she shot her first feature film as a director, I'm Not an Easy Man, produced by Netflix. Most recently, she published two novels in French, Histoire d’Adrián Silencio (2019) and Poupées (2021). In 2021, Eléonore was diagnosed with breast cancer. She started working with photography and painting to express her experience. The ongoing intimate work she produces is titled Safe Travel.
Philo Cohen is an archivist, writer, curator, and publisher based in New York and Paris. She is the founder and Editor-in-Chief at Speciwomen, an online archive and independent publishing initiative aiming to change the representation of womxn in the arts.
