Biography
Jean Sousa moved from the east coast to Chicago in the mid-70s to pursue an MFA at School Of the Art Institute in Performance and Filmmaking. Since the late 70s, Sousas work has been shown nationally and internationally at the National Film Theater in London, the ICA in Boston, and more recently Microscope Gallery (2020) and the Collectif Jeune Cinema, Paris (2021). Her films combine aspects of feminism, performace, abstract narrative, and the physical properties of the medium.
"Sousa's films are formally rigorous, sensually present, and always inventive in their explorations of different cinematic properties." "whose Avant-Garde?" Tess Takashashi, 2016.
