Skin Deep1999

For some time between 1993 and 1998 I had been professionally shooting dramas in the UK and I read an article in a paper about racism in the army and so I wrote Skin Deep in which our black hero Charlie deals with some overt fascist treatment from Hunter, his superior and some of the other racist soldiers. He deals with this quietly in his own way and then Foster, a new black recruit joins and suffers the same problem. Foster is much bigger than Charlie and decides he will deal with Hunter by challenging him to a man to man fight outside the army base. Charlie is worried for Foster as he suspects he will be attacked by the fascists and so one night he goes to Foster to show him what he’s achieved - which is to video his superior actively being racist. Charlie says to Foster ‘you don’t have to fight because we now have him defeated’. What Charlie does not realise is that Foster is in fact homophobic and he suspects our hero of being homosexual… then things begin to unravel in Charlie’s world…
