Presentiments1977

I took my first steps in film making in 1971 - that film is now lost (though the sound work I’d engaged in from before still exists). By 1976 I had made my first video piece, a documentary with early freezes which hesitated in the frame and in watching the technical limitations play out I realised I liked the artefacts of video such that by 1977 as the member of the video group Vida we were experimenting with all of the issues that were coming up in film making at the time. Now I can see we were partially remediating the incoming video medium with film thinking, but bit by bit the materiality of video was pressing outwards into our minds and our developing aesthetic. Presentiments was an early attempt to articulate what was different between the two motion image capture mediums and in so doing speak about what video actually was.
