Projection Instructions

"Projection Instructions" is a modular program of 16mm films from the collection of the Film­-Makers’ Cooperative. The works in this program involve special instructions to the projectionist, curator, or spectator, underscoring the performative dimensions of cinematic exhibition.

The list of titles affiliated with this program includes theatrical films for single, double, and triple projection; films involving live audio or audio­visual manipulation; works of expanded cinema requiring specially­-designed equipment and as many as four projectors; as well as films that entail other, alternative arrangements of the architecture between projector, spectator, and screen. The instructions that accompany these films are highly varied, ranging from carefully-ordered performance scripts and visual diagrams to statements emphasizing flexibility, contingency, and improvisation. Yet each film approaches projection as a malleable form, an area of artistic work that is radically open to creative intervention.

Venues wishing to exhibit the program are encouraged to curate individual combinations of films that reflect their own interests, equipment, and exhibition spaces.
