On Tuesday, September 29th at 7:00pm, join us at The Film-Makers' Cooperative screening room (475 Park Avenue South, 6th Floor) for a rare chance to catch three silent films by Warren Sonbert on 16mm: DIVIDED LOYALTIES, THE CUP AND THE LIP, and HONOR AND OBEY.

TICKETS

Three silent films by Warren Sonbert, spanning a decade of his exploration of polyvalent montage: editing in which images connect through shifting associations of line, color, movement, gesture, and subject. Everyday encounters and far-flung travels become a lively exchange between images, as a shape or gesture in one shot finds an unexpected echo in another.

Divided Loyalties (1978) explores the relationship between art and industry, completing the initial montage triptych begun with Carriage Trade and Rude Awakening.

The Cup and the Lip (1986) holds its images in unresolved anticipation, keeping fulfillment just out of reach, while Honor and Obey (1988) finds tensions beneath the surface of social rituals and everyday displays of authority. The latter two were Sonbert’s final silent montage films before his return to sound with Friendly Witness (1989).

Total Run Time: 63 minutes.
