About
"The sexiest way to have a seizure." —Evan Schwartz, Programmer, Flickers NYC
Introducing Belle Jolie! documents the debut burlesque performance of the filmmaker’s close friend “Belle Jolie” at the LGBTQIA+ bar, The Dark Lady, in February 2024. Glimpses of a Valentine’s party from earlier that evening, hosted and decorated by friend and artist Willow Giannotti-Garlinghouse, are intermingled with the burlesque footage.
A love letter to all things red, pink, and divinely feminine, Introducing Belle Jolie! draws on the cheeky eroticism of Doris Wishman's nudie-cuties and the decadence and ritualism of Kenneth Anger's queer underground cinema, as well as the flicker filmmaking style of Paul Sharits and Tony Conrad.
Shot on Super 8mm, the film is soundtracked by the 1967 single “Suey,” sung by Jayne Mansfield and featuring a pre-fame Jimi Hendrix on guitar.
